Distinctive physical fact
The Republic's cities are made of glass. Spired, multicoloured, shaped by glass-mages whose patterns are passed down family lines. Every public building, every wall, every important object is glass. Some of it is solid; some of it is hollow and full of trapped air; some of it remembers being warm. Glass-mages can shape the material with their breath if they know the right pattern. The mountains in the distance are also glass. They were not always.
Dominant want
A pattern that bears their name. The dominant magical tradition — Pattern Magic — works through inherited and discovered patterns: geometric forms, sequences, ratios that produce specific effects when properly invoked. Patterns are personal property. Inheriting a pattern is inheriting wealth. Discovering a new pattern is the highest achievement available to a citizen of the Republic.
Relationship to the Paths
Aware but conflicted. The Paths are patterns in the deep sense, and the Pattern-mages have known about them for centuries. Some Paths are mapped on glass tablets in temples. But a faction of mages believes the Paths are corrupted patterns — flaws in the world's structure that should be sealed. A different faction believes they are proof of the Republic's pattern-theology, and should be celebrated. Solace operates here under a complex permit system that varies by region and is constantly being renegotiated.

The Universal Pattern
The pattern a senior mage claims to have discovered. If it works, it would not be a Path in the conventional sense — it would be a technique for opening any Path anywhere. A Mystic who studies the pattern reports it feels wrong in a way that is hard to articulate. The pattern is symmetrical. The Mystic suspects it shouldn't be.
The Glassblown Republic — Pocket 5-Lambda
Filed by Cultural Liaison M. Tarn · ten years ago
Settled Frontier world. Pre-industrial / artisanal tech with extensive use of structured magic ("Pattern Magic" — see appended technical notes). Single unified culture (Patternist) organized as a confederated republic of glass-mage families. Population ~12 million.
Atmosphere: Breathable. Significant ambient magical activity. Solace personnel report mild Spirit attunement amplification — pleasant in small doses, exhausting in long deployments.
Useful contacts: The Solace Cultural Liaison Office (Liaison M. Tarn). The Glass-Mage Council, with formal introduction. Avoid direct contact with the Sealing Order unless mission-essential.
Hazards: Glass-mage politics are intricate and consequential. Do not damage glass installations. Do not attempt to acquire pattern-knowledge without licensing.
Notes: This is an excellent world for Solace personnel interested in Local Magic initiation. Pattern Magic is rigorous, well-documented, and willing to teach motivated students.
